Western Sydney forms half of the Country of Cumberland, defined by river system, an ocean and the Blue Mountains. It remained isolated from the heart of Sydney due to the city's centre being formed at the extreme eastern edge of the country and due to the rivers being too shallow for the first fleet to birth at the heart of the region.
